This famous temple was built within sight of Dikwella town on the
Matara Tangalla main road. At that time, the name Vavurukannala
came into use because a rest house was located on a small hill
close to two lakes. This ancient sacred site has been named Vavrukannala
Buddharaja Maha Viharaya since March 2, 1969, as the largest Buddha statue
is seated. Before that this temple was known as Sudassanananda temple.
